Termites vs Ants

Termite Information

The most economically significant termites, that is; the termites that will attack your home are 'subterranean'. Termites live underground and move about through constructed tunnels. Due to the way the termites bodies are designed, they cannot survive for very long outside of the controlled humid environment of their nests and tunnel systems. This is not only why they survive so well undetected, but thrive. The only time you may ever actually see termites is if you discover them youself in your home or garden, or during the warmer wetter months of the year when reproductive termites known as 'alates' emerge from cuts made for them in trees or stumps and begin the mating process. These are potential kings and queens and although cannot eat timber just yet, it is indicative that there is a significant nest or nests nearby. These alates will become Queens and Kings in their own right, establishing new nests.

Termite Nests

Generally the main termite nest is found underground or in the crown of the root of a tree. When the termite colony becomes too large or overcrowded, the colony can create sub-nests. An intricate maze of tunnels will interconnect between each sub-nest back to the main nest. Some sub-nests have been found 100 metres from the main nest, that's pretty amazing considering the size of the termite! It is common to find sub-nests in homes, almost like a forward base to begin the attack. Although not unknown to find a main nest in a home, the sub-nest is more common. homes are usually formed in soil. Within these mounds, termites build elaborate tunnel systems and mud tunnels through which they access above-ground food sources.
